Toyota FT-86

Toyota FT-86 The FT-86 is labelled a concept, but is expected to reach the road in 2011 alongside a Subaru-badged version. It's powered by Subaru's 2.0-litre boxer engine, which puts out 146bhp in current production form but should develop slightly more in future iterations. As we're well aware, the four-pot can be turbocharged to produce monstrous power outputs, but that would also put the price up: Toyota and Subaru are aiming to keep the cost as low as possible to attract younger drivers to the brand.

Toyota FT-86 Inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe of the '80s, the FT-86 concept was designed by the automaker's ED2 styling studio in France and bears a remarkable resemblance to the FT-HS concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show several years back. Since it's a "concept," Toyota hasn't divulged much about the FT-86 yet, but we do know it's powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter boxer four sending power to the rear wheels. Toyota focused on keeping the weight down to improve handling and, according to one source, the platform is unique to the concept. The engine sits lower in the engine bay to aid aerodynamics while keeping the center of gravity in check, and the overall dimensions of Toyota's new 2+2 are 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches.

Toyota FT-86 The FT-86 has a 2+2 seating configuration and measures 416cm in length, just a fraction longer than the Audi TT and around 18cm shorter than the Lotus Evora. We'll find out much more about the FT-86 - and, perhaps, its Subaru counterpart - in Tokyo in a couple of weeks' time.

Toyota FT-86

Toyota FT-86 oyota has released very little information for the FT-86, but a brief press release issued today points to a lightweight body and a low centre of gravity as specific focus points for the concept’s development. The FT-86 measures 4160mm long, 1760mm wide and 1260mm tall, riding on a 2570mm wheelbase. Whether the FT-86 is a near-production look at the upcoming entry-level sportscar or yet another Toyota concept destined for the company’s museum remains to be seen. One stand-out line from the release - “The FT-86 (”86″ pronounced “hachi roku”), a compact rear-wheel-drive sports car, provides driving joy and excitement” - points to new Toyota President Akio Toyoda’s eagerness to revive Toyota’s sporting history.

Toyota MR2 Spyder

Toyota MR2 Spyder The MR-S has a mid-mounted engine for perfectly balanced handling and a wheel at each corner for quick, stable manoeuvrability. The car is short at just 3850mm long - more than a foot shorter than the current MR2. The engine is a new lightweight 1.8-litre with intelligent Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) which changes the characteristics of the engine to give more power, better torque at low engine speeds and lower fuel consumption. The gearbox is sequential and would enable changes to be made swiftly either via the conventional gear lever or buttons mounted on the steering wheel - as with racing cars - to allow the driver to keep both hands on the wheel at all times.

Toyota MR2 Spyder The interior of the Toyota MR-S has a simple and gutsy tightness, with a minimalist approach that echoes the sports cars of old. Practicality is not forgotten with luggage space provided behind the seats. But MR-S, should it ever go into production, is meant to be a car for people who want to drive, who travel light and love the wind in their hair.

Toyota MR2 Spyder

Toyota MR2 Spyder The Toyota MR2 Spyder was introduced for 2000 in only one well-equipped trim level. Antilock brakes, 15-inch wheels, air-conditioning, a glass rear window, power windows and locks, and a CD stereo were standard equipment. The mid-mounted 1.8-liter inline-4 was rated at 138 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available was a five-speed manual. In 2002, Toyota introduced the five-speed Sequential Manual Transmission or SMT for the MR2, making it the cheapest car at the time (by a long shot) to offer a true automated clutch manual. We found this option easy to use and liked the way it matched revs on downshifts, even though it sapped some acceleration from the engine. Without a fully automatic mode, however, the SMT's value was questionable. Given this, along with potential durability concerns, we suggest that used MR2 Spyder buyers stick with the regular five-speed manual. For 2003, the MR2 Spyder underwent its midlife freshening with minor changes to the front and rear fascias and instrument panel. The SMT was upgraded to six speeds, while the rear tires grew to 16 inches.
